It is difficult to determine the actual age of this White Jade Kwan Yin Statue. I have seen similar that some say are 15th Century, but I rather doubt that. I would guess that this piece was done in the 17th or 18th Century. This is a large and heavy piece weighing 18 pounds. The measurements are : Height: 15 inches Base Width: 8 inches Shoulder Width: 6 inches Head Width: 2 3/4 inches Depth: 4 1/2 inches Kwan Yin, also spelled Kwan Yin or Quan Yin and known as Kuan Shih Yin, is known as the Goddess of Compassion & Healing. She is one of the most popular deities in all of Asia. Her name in Chinese translates as "The One who Hears the Criies of the World". She is most beloved and revered of the Chinese dieties. Kuan Yin is the Divine Mother we all seek: merciful, tender, compassionate, lovinng, protecting, caring, healing, healing, and wise. She quietly comes to the aid of her children everywhere. Her mantra is "Om Mani Padme Hum" Many believe that she is the female representation of Avalokitesvara, who is the Tibetan and Nepalese God of Compassion. In Asia, statues of Kuan Yin can be found in front of, or on the grounds of many Buddhist temples. |
