Item Description:
This is a one-of-a-kind hand made Victorian spider pin. It is NOT made of celluloid, but I believe it is not true ivory either. My guess is vegetable ivory, made of the doum-palm nut. It has been carved in a double layer with interesting deep veins. The brass spider has a paste rhinestone head and a facet black body. The popular insect motifs were in fashion from 1860 through the Edwardian period until around 1910. It's hard to say just when this was made during that period; however, I would estimate it to be a late Victorian piece.
