Pink Shell Cameo 10K Gold Frame - Brooch/Pendant

This is a beautiful pink shell cameo set in a gorgeous 10K gold frame. The frame is1/4" wide and features openwork and floral design. The cameo is also beautiful, but has an age fracture on the right side. It does show on the front but bear in mind you are looking at an enhanced picture. I don't think there is any danger of the cameo falling out.  Not too obvious unless you get very close. The crack could probably be lightened by a good cleaning.  The carving is exceptional and not ordinary. The frame is worth the price.  This is about 1-3/4" overall and is marked 10K on the brooch and on the pin assembly. It is a pendant as well as a brooch.

The term cameo originally meant carving a design into a single material in bas-relief. They were usually done using shell, stone or other material. Indications are that cameos were first carved in the 15th or 16th century where the subject matter was derived from the Greek and Roman period.  However, popularity flourished during the reign of Queen Victoria. Later cameos were mass produced and molded using celluloid, bakelite, lucite and newer resins. Popular now are laser made cameos because of their intricate detail and color combinations.



Intaglio jewelry is reverse cut from a cameo , cut from the back and sometimes highlighted with handpainting, enamels or other colored glass or gemstone.
