The diversion of resources to the war effort caused many creative uses of materials. Old pins can occasionally be found of plastic with metallic coated plating. At the time, many of these were inexpensive and, understandably, few survived. We consider this piece somewhat rare. We have never seen the insect motif in plated plastic. The plating has worn into a rather attractive shaded patina that is remarkable and ironically much like the iridescent qualities of genuine insects. This bee or wasp has a faux moonstone cabochon head and red rhinestone eyes. A next-generation of plastic insects kin to the early plastic and celluloid cicadas of the 20's and 30's, we think this one is special.
