The seal is a playful, inquisitive creature -- a familiar sight in zoos, circuses, and marine parks the world over. This bright animal is an excellent swimmer and diver, and it feeds on shell fish, fish, and even sea birds. Young seals do not swim instinctively, however; they are taught to swim by their parents Seals are often seen flopping about on rocky oucroppings and basking in the sun on sandy beaches. Their familiar "barks" still can be heard in many wild coastal areas of America.
