Nice Siam Sterling brooch 1-3/8" oval featuring central figure in white enamel set in sterling. Signed on the back Siam Sterling. FAQ - This jewelry was popular 1930s-1970's. The design was carved into sterling and then filled with an "enamel-like" powder and baked. It was referred to as "Niello" or "Nielloware" The designs feature figures from cultural mythology including Mekkala, the Goddess of Lightning from the Buddhist and Hindu Indian legend, Ramayama. These pieces represent the excellent craftsmanship of the community and continued to be popular sweetheart gifts from soldiers throughout the Viet Nam War. The labeling "Siam" was indicative of earlier items.
