Belgian Carved Dining Room Set

Once in a blue moon, a dining room set comes along that completely captivates us, and we have to wear drooling bibs...such is this amazing confection. European, and dating to the 1950's-1960's, it is the most enthralling combination of exotic woods and fine, high style carving, that we have seen in quite some time. There are ten stupendous pieces.

First off is a refectory table of great size and charm. The fruitwood is finished in the warmest, loveliest, most satiny shade of honey...the edges are slightly darker, giving it a burnt sugar and caramel look. The sturdy top is supported by two hefty, yet graceful pedestals, and four human figures guard the corners of the table...whether they are the four seasons, the four winds, or goddesses or gods, it is up to your imagination...the carving is replete with detail and imperial in form. Measurements are 31½" high, 79" long, and 39½" wide.

Next are a half dozen tall and stately King or Queen chairs. Jacobean in form, the showcase human heads, each individually carved on the ears; a regally embellished crest, with leaves and swags, and a curvaceous and delightful skirt. You will also find comfortable brocade upholstery, in shades of cream, old rose, and forest green, quite Medieval in effect. Measurements are 47" high, 19" seat height; 19" wide, and 18" deep. Then, the two companion pieces....these will surely leave you breathless!

The china cabinet is a concoction of human figures...a man and woman, perhaps Adam and Eve? are in full and fine form on the niches on the corners....the doors are highlighted by coquettish maidens or nymphs...the upper center doors are decorated with Spanish style saints or female figures...quite ethereal and completely fascinating. The two outer doors have amber leaded glass, crackle finish, in a Gothic arch motif; the clear panels are bevelled and leaded, as well. There is a french niche for your finest crystal bowl in the top, and the piéce de résistance sits proudly atop the soaring top...a pair of chubby cherubs flanking a classical urn. There are shelves within, and working keys. Measurements are 99" high, 79" wide, and 21" deep.

Last, but certainly not least, is a heavenly credenza with cherub topped mirror. The base echoes the carving on the china cabinet....men and women, goddesses....roomy cabinets with shelves, and silverware drawers. The bevelled mirror has smiling visages of North Wind faces or Green Men or such along the sides, and a torchére at the base....all leading to the sweet and serene angels flitting above the top. Measurements are 38" high, 111" wide, and 21" deep; the mirror is 53" high, 80" wide, and 3" deep. Condition of this masterpiece ensemble is very good; there is one small scratch on the credenza top, and there is one small repaired strip of molding on the china cabinet, barely visible.
