This nice vintage brooch is made in Mexico, However, it is Alpaca, not sterling silver. It measures 1-3/4" in diameter and features a center Aztec calendar design with turquoise enameling and shell inlay. Signed on the back Made In Mexico Alpaca. Alpaca Silver is a combination of the alloys of Zinc, Iron, Copper and Nickel. The first observation is sometimes to call it Silver or Sterling but it is not - more comparable to stainless steel and not near as soft as sterling. Alpaca is also hypoallergenic and is also usually associated with the South American countries especially Peru. It is NOT associated with the wooly Alpaca animal. In the past it was considered a substitute for the "Sterling" look but is now being recognized as a jewelry medium of its own with its own characteristics and beauty.
