These pearls are made by artifically inserting unusually-shaped foreign objects into mollusks which causes the mollusks to create pearls over time in the same manner that natural pearls are created. The only difference between freshwater and natural pearls is that the foreign object which becomes the nucleus of the pearl is inserted intentionally rather than as an accident of nature.
