Presented here are two books containing information about Alfred Stieglitz, his photography collections and his impact on American life and art history. Book #1: "The Collection of Alfred Stieglitz: Fifty pioneers of modern photography", by Weston Naef. Published by Viking Press (A Studio Book), under the auspices of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in 1978. (ISBN 0-670-67051-0) The original book/dust cover is intact and both the book and the cover are in very good condition. Excerpt from the book jacket: "Alfred Stieglitz collected photographs with an ardor shared by few of his contemporaries, frequently boldly disregarding the work of professionals with established reputations while acquiring that of little known photographers. His selections were highly personal....diverse....(and) stand today as tangible evidence of the strides made during an era when, largely because of Stieglitz's influence, photography emerged from its status as a conjurer's trick to recognition as an art form." Book #2: "America & Alfred Stieglitz: a collective portrait", edited by Waldo Frank, Lewis Mumford, Dorothy Norman, Paul Rosenfeld and Harold Rugg. Paperbound edition copyright 1979 by Aperture, Inc., published by arrangement with Doubleday & Company, Inc. (ISBN 0-89381-040-1) "This remarkable collection of essays was assembled in 1934 as a tribute to Alfred Stieglitz on the occasion of his seventieth birthday. After forty-five years, it remains the most eloquent record of his unparalleled impact on the course of American culture." "A champion of the medium (of photography)........" Book has some minor wear but I would say the condition is good. Priced at $95.00 for both books. |
