Vintage German Fragonard portrait pendant necklace and earrings set depicts a seated lady with a basket of flowers on her lap being serenaded by a suitor. She is offering him a sprig of posies from her basket. The subject matter of this portrait set recalls Fragonard's art which, so quaintly by today's standards, was referred to as erotic -- depicting sexual desire and the promise perhaps of a sexual liason. The portrait on the medallion bears the signature Fragonard although we suspect that this reproduction takes license with Fragonard's famed paintings of the late 1700s to the early 1800s. The medallion, generically referred to as porcelain, is a pendant with a type of reproduction transfer on top of a material we cannot see the back of to identify. It measures approximately two inches round and has a beautiful antiqued gold tone bezel, fancy pronged setting and simulated pearls surround the portrait. It comes on its own original vintage 24" chain with spring ring closure. The matching earrings are also set with fancy pronged settings and surrounded by matching simulated pearls. They measure approximately 7/8" round and are signed "Germany" on the clips which maintain their original tension. In Very Good Condition, we note some superficial cracks under magnification on the medallion that do not affect the portrait's appearance when worn. Otherwise, the only remaining criticism we might have is that the spring ring is darkened with age. It is not often we find such a pretty scene with the original simulated pearls intact. Charming and romantic, this lovely pendant necklace and earrings set is a treasure. The bail is large enough to accommodate your choice of chains, ribbons or cords -- possibly even a very small pearl necklace for many different romantic looks.
