This antique cast iron baseball mechanical bank was manufactured by the J & E Stevems Company in the late 1800's. This bank incorporates a operatable bank, Black Americana and of course baseball players.
The bank consists of three figural baseball players set on a base that reads
“Dark Town Battery.”
To operate the bank you cock the pitchers right arm and place a coin in the pitchers glove. You then press the lever located behind the catcher. When the lever is pressed it causes the pitcher to toss the coin, the batter swings his bat but misses and the catchers left hand moves inward. The coin shoots into a large opening in front and below the catcher. It is marked PATD. JAN 17 1888 on the underside and PAT Feb 2, 1885 on the coin trap, although the 85' is hard to discern and it also could be 88' .
The bank measures 7 1/4 inches tall, 2 3/4 inches wide, and 9 3/4 inches long. It is in excellent condition. This bank is all original, un-restored, except for the repair of the bat and has approximately 60% - 70% of it‘s paint remaining, as can be seen in the photos. Also, the repair to the bat is evident in the photo's with just a slight ridge at the repair point. It appears that this repair was professionally done and very rigid.
